Evaluating Arguments

Evaluating Arguments:

Q 1 : Does the writer provide sufficient reasons to support the conclusion?

A 1 : Yes, the writer has provided sufficient reason to support the conclusion. There are many evidences that he provide to prove stock is better than bonds. It’s also made comparison between both of the investment and the research that Siegal has made for many years. Beside that, the writer has made some debate that telling stock investment is more benefits than bonds with strong evidence. Furthermore, he also put some expert view and experience from those who invest in stocks. The result is the stocks are more profitable and less cost rather than bonds.

Q 2 : Does the argument valid? / Are the arguments logically reasoned and developed?

A 2 : Yes, the argument is valid because the writer delivers understandable arguments and it supports us to get a right conclusion. And the arguments is logically reasoned and developed because the writer does a good job in getting the premises to support the arguments by giving clear backgrounds, evidences, and even discussion among experts for the topic with such fine job and comprehensible ways.

Q 3 : Do you think the quality of the supporting statements good?

A 3 : In my opinions the quality of the supporting statements are good enough because in this article the author included many statements that can use to help people understand and “believe in” the premises that he had developed in this article. Let us take some examples, in the first premise the author used supporting argument to elaborate more about the premise, and also reference to authority that refer to the expert’s views or opinions and others. With these supporting ideas or examples, the article becomes stronger and persuasive. Besides that, in this article Justin Fox-the author also use the assumption of experts and with some evidences that can easily persuade people to believe the conclusion because evidence is the exact information or fact. To make people trust or agree your point of view, the types of supporting statements are important in an article. People like to trust the actuality compare to others. In this article, the author provided many reference to authority supporting statements, evidence and others. So, the conclusion is strong and we are accept to it but if the author can include some supporting statement like anecdotes and definition about the premises the article will become perfect and influential.

Q 4 : What bias can you detect the way the argument is put together?

A 4 : The bias that we had detect from the article is that the writer believe that the stock is the best investment for long run. As his opinion, stocks were less vulnerable to have their value eaten by the inflation in the long run compares to the bonds and other types of investment. We can know it from the article “Prices go up and they go down, but give stocks enough time and they deliver returns that trounce those of bonds, real estate, commodities or any other asset class”. The writer also shows that over past two century the stocks had done dramatically better for investor compare to others. Therefore, stocks is the best choice for invest. Besides that, although the writer had mention about the disadvantages of stocks, but at the end he still manage to convince that stock is the best investment in the long run. In his opinion, investment for stocks is risk. But it manages to give good return in terms of long run.

Q 5 : Does the writer use any vague words? Explain.

A 5 : There is no vague word in this article. The writer has included the premises that support the conclusion. We have found 3 premises in the article and both premises got supporting statement that makes it stronger. Some premises have a weakness but the writer has done his best to put the supporting statement at his premises. The evidence that the writer put into his article is clear and has been prove base on the stock investment report. Beside that, the writer has included a supporting statement with a reference to authority which is come from expert view. Furthermore, the writer also includes some assumption from the stocks researcher who has experience in investment in many years.

Q 6 : What definitions does the writer use? Are they good?

A 6 : The writer has try to define about the stocks is more risky than bonds but as a reward, it will gain more profit to investor who take the risk in buying stocks. But he did not explain how risky are stock is and how much the investor will get. He just tells the reader that stock has made an excellent long-run investment with returns that far outpaced those of bonds. The statement that he write should clear about how risky the stocks comparing with the bonds. He seems like try to hide something to the reader about the weakness of stock using unclear definition.
